Essential Job Responsibilities
Technical leadLead development and technical inputs on overall research design, including site selection, refining the research questions, data collection methods and instruments;
Support the drafting of technical reports from all research components and finalization of all research deliverables and interim products;
Coordinate input and integrate revisions from key actors including research partners (Tufts’ Feinstein International Center), Mercy Corps country and senior HQ staff and in country donor (OFDA) as needed;
Ensure the quality, timeliness, and utility of all research processes and products
Identify key internal and external audiences, and country / regional fora, key events, conferences and speaking events to support uptake, visibility and dissemination of research findings
Supports on all research activities, and lead cooperation and collaboration with FIC including coordination of any field visits as needed
Manage the work of the MC Field Coordinator, who will be responsible for fieldwork and logistics
Lead coordination between HQ and field for MC including program coordination and donor deliverables
Field WorkCo-ordination with the Principal Investigators (PIs), lead training of enumerators / data collectors and in-country team on sampling procedures, administering data collection instruments, and data quality control
Manage the piloting / testing and refinement of the data collection instruments.
Manage and provide oversight / quality assurance of data collection process, including managing enumerators and troubleshooting
Lead the quantitative data collection, including training and supervision of facilitators
Collect qualitative data through a range of participatory and other methods
Coordinate with RECOVER program M&E to ensure integration of research fieldwork into program M&E activities and timelines
Data Management and AnalysisIn coordination with the PIs, support the assigned FIC team to ensure cleaning and recoding of survey data, and transcription and preparation of qualitative data to make it ready for analysis
Oversee the assigned FIC team members work to ensure quality data management, including inputting to survey database development, qualitative analysis tool, and troubleshoot any problems with data quality
In coordination with the PIs and FIC team, contribute to preliminary analysis of the data and data analysis support, as needed
Provide data interpretation and analysis capacity building support to local Mercy Corps M&E staff/enumerators
PROGRAM AND TEAM MANAGEMENTOversee program startup and ongoing program management and administration of teams across various field locations
Ensure program implementation is on time, target and budget, using effective M&E systems to reach desired impacts.
Create and maintain systems ensuring effective and transparent use of financial resources for timely and informative reporting in line with donor and Mercy Corps policies and procedures.
Create and sustain a work environment of mutual respect where team members strive to achieve excellence.
Promote accountability, communicate expectations and provide constructive feedback via regular performance reviews.
Supervise, hire and orient new team members as necessary.
Provide team members with information, tools and other resources to improve performance and reach objectives.
Contribute to country team-building efforts, help team members identify problem-solving options and ensure the integration of all team members into relevant decision-making processes.
SecurityEnsure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.

Accountability to Beneficiaries
Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.
Field Coordinator; Indirectly responsible for field enumerators
Reports Directly To: Mercy Corps South Sudan’s Director of Programs with dotted line reporting to M&E and Program Development Manager
Works Directly With: In country program, operations and finance teams; Senior Director for Research and Learning, Resilience Advisor, Principal Investigators (FIC) and FIC team members (Research Assistant, Project Manager and others assigned to the research)
Knowledge and Experience
Bachelors’ degree in international development, humanitarian assistance, or related field (Masters preferred)
At least 2-4 years of research experience, including 1-2 years in developing country contexts
South Sudan experience preferred; extended experience in other similar country contexts or in the region acceptable
Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively multi-task, work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Experience conducting research and living in fragile, conflict affected contexts
Experience living and working in remote locations
Excellent leadership and people skills required to hire, train, and manage local teams
Ability to work with people from different cultures and in new settings
Familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods, including research design, participatory data collection methods, and use of data analysis software
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to creatively problem-solve
Demonstrated skills with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings, both visually and in writing
Previous experience managing research projects and partners
