Job Description

  •  Report any potential transgression of the above-mentioned legislation, or other legislative control relating to transplantation and Nursing.
  • Keep accurate patient records at all times in compliance with inherent to administration policy.
  • Maintains statistics, correspondence and communication.
  • Assistance with administrative tasks of staff on leave.
  • Provides service providers with directions and details for billing purposes.
  • Collection and collation of all accounts relating to the donor and recipient as per the Hospital and Transplant Standard Operating Policies.
  • Financial control and maintaining scrutiny on all accounts ensuring the correct tariffs and billings are in line with standard departmental arrangements.
  • Financial records to be filed according to unit standards.
  • Ensure cost effectiveness at all times
  •  Ensure the promotion of evidence based practice relating to the potential organ donor and management.
  • Serves as a 24 hour consultant to nurses and other health professionals with regards to organ donation.
  • Scientific early on site evaluation of potential organ donor.
  •  Ensure viability of referred organs.
  •  Obtain consent for organ retrieval from relatives of potential organ donors.
  •  Maintain clinical support of a potential donor.
  •  Communicates effectively and diplomatically with recipient coordinators, transplant Surgeons and Physicians.
  •  Liaises with blood bank, laboratory and all relevant departments in order to track samples, optimise progress and expedite result availability.
  • Collaborates with and refers suitable organs to other centres within the regions and nationally.
  • Coordinates the vital step by step prerequisites and arrangements required by the transplant team for procurement of organs including theatre, units, anaesthetists, flights, hospital managers, matrons, state pathologists, etc.
  • Coordinates other centres team’s arrival for organ procurement e.g. ambulance transfers, support staff, etc.
  •  Determines logistical feasibility and financial implication concerning transfers, flights and all donor costs.
  • Trouble shoots, locates and sources equipment and resources not available at procurement centres.
  • Arranges flights and transfers according to flight protocol (including ODF flights). Provides procurement support and advice including attendance in theatre to ensure that the retrieval is efficient and professional.
  • Responsible for the coordination of the recovery and preservation of donated organs.
  • Assists with packaging of procured organs and dispatch of organs to transfer centres.
  •  Promote organ transplant awareness in relevant groups.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of protocol and standards of care for the potential organ donor in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team thus enhancing the outcome of the transplanted patient.
  • Refer patients or families for assistance utilising health system and community resources as appropriate.
  • Participate in organ transplant program planning and management within the health system.
  •  Maintain good working relationships with medical personnel, patients and their families.
  • Regular talks and visits to units to enhance working relationships.
  •  Provide care, advice and compassion to all patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  •  Provides education and consultation about organ donation and transplantation for medical, nursing and paramedical staffing order to ensure organ referrals.
  • Provides professional presentations in formal lecturing environment.
